Detection and Use of Small J Couplings in Solid State Nmr Experiments

چکیده
Over the years, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has become an important tool for materials science, with its local point of view that is highly complementary to the structural information provided by diffraction techniques, electron microscopy, and molecular modeling for example. As compared to other interactions that determine the spectral expression of the local structure of the observed nuclei in solid-state NMR experiments, the J coupling, characteristic of the chemical bonds, has received far less attention because of its being generally so small that it is masked in the line-widths. Nevertheless, the scalar or isotropic part of J couplings, which is not averaged by magic angle spinning (MAS), can be evidenced in many systems, and exploited to unequivocally characterize the extended coordination sphere. In a first step we describe the different experiments that permit the observation and the measurement of J couplings, even when dealing with quadrupolar nuclei. We then present new and recently-published results that illustrate the state of the art of NMR methodologies based on or intended for measuring Jcouplings in solids and the novel perspectives that they open towards better understanding of ordered and disordered materials at the sub-nanometric scale, a length scale that is otherwise difficult to access.

Increasing the accuracy of structural investigations by MAS spin-echo solid-state NMR experiments
The use of rotor-synchronized Hahn-echo pulse train (RS-HEPT) H decoupling, in a MAS (Magic Angle Spinning) N spin-echo NMR experiment allows the use of longer the spin-echo durations compared to the case when conventional decoupling is applied, hence enabling the accurate determination of very small J couplings down to a few Hz. Here, a thorough numerical analysis of the N spin-echo under RS-H...

The solid–solid reactions of electron-donor compounds, such as: barbituric acid (1a), thiobarbituric acid (1b), 1,3-dimethyl barbituric acid (1c), phenol (1d) and resorcinol (1e) with diazotized o-nitroaniline (3), m-nitroaniline (4) and p-nitroaniline (5) catalyzed by p-toluenesulfonic acid (2) afford azo dyes by grinding in good yields. This new method totally avoids the use of inorganic acid...
متن کاملRelativistic nuclear magnetic resonance J-coupling with ultrasoft pseudopotentials and the zeroth-order regular approximation.
We present a method for the first-principles calculation of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) J-coupling in extended systems using state-of-the-art ultrasoft pseudopotentials and including scalar-relativistic effects. The use of ultrasoft pseudopotentials is allowed by extending the projector augmented wave (PAW) method of Joyce et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 127, 204107 (2007)]. We benchmark it against...

We describe three- and four-dimensional semiconstant-time transferred echo double resonance (SCT-TEDOR) magic-angle spinning solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments for the simultaneous measurement of multiple long-range (15)N-(13)C(methyl) dipolar couplings in uniformly (13)C, (15)N-enriched peptides and proteins with high resolution and sensitivity. The methods take advantage...
متن کاملSpectral editing in solid-state NMR using scalar multiple quantum filters.
In this paper we describe the use of heteronuclear scalar couplings in solid-state NMR in order to generate multiple-quantum filtering (MQF) pulse sequences. These sequences can be used to edit CP/MAS spectra according to carbon multiplicity. Analytic expressions for the intensity of the MQF signals are obtained using the standard product operator formalism. Experiments that demonstrate the tec...
